The tide went out and left something behind.

Not damage. Not wreckage. Just stillness. The seaweed-draped rocks warm in the early light, the water so calm it barely knows what to do with itself, a wooded island sitting quietly in the middle distance like it has nowhere to be and no intention of moving. The whole world in this frame is at rest — not asleep, not absent, but genuinely, deeply at rest.

This is the coast of Maine at low tide. And it is one of the most honest photographs I have ever taken.

Because most of the time we only see water when it's dramatic. When it's crashing and foaming and demanding to be noticed. We forget that the same water that storms can also be this — glass-flat, silver-blue, so still you can see the sky in it. The same rocks that disappear under high tide sit golden and quiet in the morning sun when the water pulls back. The world doesn't stop being beautiful during the calm. 

It just gets a different kind of beautiful.

Serenity isn't the absence of everything hard. It's what's left when the water goes out.

Every person who has ever sat in a hospital — patient, family, friend — knows what it feels like to wait for the tide to change. The long hours of stillness that aren't peaceful at all.
